What is Reflection?

Reflection is a journaling app that helps you make a habit of self-reflection, not merely jotting down thoughts.

The app offers traditional blank-page journaling, guided prompts, personalized insights, and AI-powered features to help you dive deeper into your experiences, recognize patterns, and notice personal growth.

How it works

With Reflection, you can explore your thoughts on your own or have a little guidance along the way.

Share thoughts however you need to

Typing your thoughts is one of several ways to journal with Reflection. You can also speak an entry, and the app will transcribe it. Reflection can even scan a handwritten journal and save it digitally.

The app also connects with AI platforms like ChatGPT and Claude, letting you journal and revisit past Reflection entries within those AI conversations.

Use templates or prompts for more structure

Reflection’s Quick Templates can help you get started if you’re unsure what to write. You can select templates like Evening Wind Down, Gratitude, Morning Pages—or create your own.

The app also has personalized prompts based on previous entries. A prompt may follow up on an event you mentioned being nervous about or ask you to dive deeper into an emotion you previously expressed.

You’ll also find over 100 Guided Journeys created by wellness experts. These programs lead you through a topic—such as anxiety, relationships, and self-discovery—one prompt at a time.

Use AI-powered tools to dive deeper

After writing an entry, you can use Reflection’s AI Coach to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences more deeply.

The AI Coach asks follow-up questions based on what you just wrote instead of pulling from a fixed list. For example, if you write about a difficult interaction at work, the AI Coach might encourage you to explore why it bothered you or what you may have needed in that moment.

Voice Call takes it a step further. You can talk through your thoughts right in the app. Reflection listens and responds with follow-up questions. Think of it as a journal conversation, with the transcript automatically saved so you can revisit it later.

Learn from periodic reviews

Reflection creates weekly and monthly reviews of your journal entries. You can use them to identify recurring themes, patterns, and changes over time.

You can also explore past entries on your own using the Ask Your Journal feature. For example, you might ask, “When do I tend to feel most anxious?” or “What have been my biggest wins this month?”

Reflection searches your journal history to help you find connections and better understand your experiences.

Where Reflection stands out

Reflection stands out because it’s more than a place to record your thoughts. You can use personalized prompts and AI-driven features to dive deeper into your experiences, recognize patterns, and learn more about yourself over time.

And you don’t have to love writing to use the platform. It makes journaling more approachable with features like Voice Journaling, Voice Call, and journal templates and prompts.

What to know before you sign up

Reflection has a free-forever plan that gives access to several features, including unlimited journal entries, monthly and yearly reviews, analytics and insights, reminders, and import and export capabilities. The free version offers limited syncing across devices, and you can only add one photo to a journal entry.

Additional features, including unlimited access to AI-powered tools like journal search, insights, and guidance, require a subscription—$8 per month or $69 per year. Both the monthly and annual subscriptions come with a 7-day free trial.

A Premium subscription also includes advanced privacy settings. Your journal entries are encrypted and never used to train AI models, even on the free plan, according to Reflection. With Premium, you can lock the app using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode, or secure individual entries.

Overall, Reflection might be worth exploring if you’re looking for a simple way to start journaling, or you want to dive deeper into what you’ve shared with guided prompts and AI coaching.

The Reflection app FAQs

Is the Reflection app free?

Reflection has a free plan that includes unlimited journal entries, periodic reviews, reminders, and other features. However, unlimited access to AI-powered tools and additional privacy settings require a Premium subscription, which costs $8 per month or $69 per year.

Is the Reflection app good?

Reflection makes it easier to build a journal habit that goes beyond simply writing down your thoughts. It might be a good option if you want guidance or prompts as you journal, or if you hope to uncover patterns over time.

How does journaling help with mental health?

Journaling can be a safe space to identify and process difficult emotions and better understand your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Over time, you might uncover patterns, identify stressors, and notice growth. And you don’t have to write every day or create lengthy, profound entries to benefit from the practice.
